News Director | KSHB-TV | Kansas City, MO
KSHB-TV, KC's NBC Action News Station is looking for a dynamic addition
to our dynamic News Department.
Primary Purpose
What your role contributes to Scripps
The News Director is responsible for leading a team that executes and
delivers quality content to multiple platforms with an emphasis on
community coverage and journalism. The News Director will develop and
implement measurable strategies for audience growth.
Key Activities
The primary processes you conduct in your role
- Create & implement strategic plans for audience growth
- Communicate a compelling and inspiring vision consistent with company
strategy
- Analyze and respond to trends affecting the industry and DMA
- Approve all newsroom personnel decisions
- Develop and control annual budget to comply with station guidelines
- Build and maintain key relationships to foster a positive news image
within the community
- Knowledge and understanding of Federal, State and local laws as well
as First & Fourteenth Amendments
- Demonstrate strong news judgment, knowledge of journalistic ethics,
libel law and organizational skills
- Work closely with other members of station management team to meet
departmental and station goals
- Ability to adapt current resources to emerging technology
- Supervise and provide regular feedback and yearly performance
appraisals for direct reports with ultimate responsibility for all
newsroom personnel
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office
- Broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
- Advanced oral and written communication skills
- Effective in a variety of formal presentation settings both inside and
outside the organization
- Proven and effective leadership skills; fosters open dialogue, empowers
others, addresses conflict quickly and directly

- May supervise a large team (>16) or multiple teams , usually through
subordinate managers or supervisors;
- Almost fully focused on supervising managers, or on technical/
professional contributors
- Typically requires BS/BA in related discipline
- Generally 7+ years experience in related field including significant
managerial experience
- Certification is required in some areas
- Responsible for managing a budget
- Primary input to hiring, firing, performance, and rewards decisions,
perhaps assisted by subordinate team leaders or senior individual
contributor employees
- Primary contribution is managing other people
- Estimates staffing needs and schedules and assigns work to
subordinates and subunits to meet service and budget targets
AND/OR
- Responsible for a major functional area
- May manage processes through service providers or indirect reports
